Using a repeater: Your radio listens on the 462 MHz frequency and transmits 5 MHz higher on the matching 467 MHz frequency. This is a +5.000 MHz offset. Repeater channel names vary by radio, so check the actual frequencies. Use these 467 MHz inputs to reach a repeater, rather than for direct radio-to-radio conversations.

Tones & On-Air Basics

Set the correct tone: If the repeater uses CTCSS (also called PL), enter its listed tone frequency—for example, 179.9 Hz. Do not rely on a “privacy code” number, because those numbers differ between brands. If it uses DCS, enter the listed code and select normal or inverted as specified by the repeater owner.

Tones are not privacy: They help a repeater recognize your signal or keep your speaker quiet until a matching signal arrives. Other people can still hear your conversation. Coverage varies: Hills, buildings, antenna height, and your location all affect how far your signal reaches.

Use your callsign: Give your FCC-assigned GMRS callsign when you finish a transmission or series of transmissions. During a longer conversation, identify at least once every 15 minutes as well.

Before you talk: Check your receive frequency, transmit offset, and tone. Follow the repeater owner’s access rules, including any permission requirements.
